TURTLEWAY ARTSCAPE PROJECT - SOLIDER CRAB SCULPTURE

Turtleway Artscape is a community collaboration between a number of organizations to develop a public art trail along the Turtleway at Tannum Sands and Boyne Island to enhance the current linear park with artwork that depicts our area. The solider crabs were designed and manufactured in stainless steel by Tracey & Brad Smith. Solider crabs are local marine residents and emerge from their holes at low tide, usually seen skittling across sand in large groups. When threatened they quickly burrow themselves back into the sand.

CONSTRUCTION

Each crab is constructed from marine grade stainless steel and an 8mm stainless steel thread post will be attached to the bottom of each crab. This will mean that they can be secured by drilling 12mm holes into the existing concrete and can be easily fixed with Chemset. Each finished crab is approximately 100mm x 100mm x 100mm high including thread post. Three slightly different crab poses will be constructed to add to the overall effect of the group design. Prototype crab illustrated in photograph.

V DUB - DRAGONFLY

The V Dub was the overall winner for the 2008 Castaway Art New Beginnings Art Competition. The sculpture currently resides in the Gladstone Botanic Garden
"I have always been a regular at the dump shop and I’m always letting my mind ponder at what else something could be. The muffler used I found years before. I’ve always wanted to make a dragonfly sculpture and one day I found the muffler in the dump shop and as soon as I saw them I knew they would be the wings, not even realising they were VW panels – hence the name. "
Materials Used:
Wings – VW mud guards
Body – muffler & bits
Eyes - Speakers
Head – Wine bottle holder

GLADSTONE REGIONAL ART IN PARKS - POP UP INSTALLATION

Partnering with Gladstone Regionals Council’s Parks and Environment Department, this Pop-Up Public Art Project has provided an opportunity for artists and community to celebrate the unique character of the place in which we live. Twenty installations, hosted in sixteen regional parks, are presented by fourteen local artists.

'ENCHANTED GARDEN'

My vision was to create an enchanted forest within Tondoon Botanic Gardens made predominantly with recycled materials to capture visitor’s imaginations and encourage them to truly explore this wonderful parkland – Journeying through the forest to discover what’s above, below and maybe hidden. Delightful little creatures, plants and fairy rings that act as a joyful vehicle for interaction, encouraging young and old to stay and play creating new memories and connection – while providing environmental education (creative take home recycling ideas).
