What is somatic therapy? Somatic therapy explores how the body expresses deeply painful experiences, applying mind-body healing to aid with trauma recovery.
If you’ve ever heard the phrase “the body keeps the score,” you may be familiar with somatic therapy already. Somatic therapy operates under the belief that emotions become trapped in the body when not processed. This approach is often used to help survivors of trauma, but certain techniques can also be useful as a treatment for an array of mental health diagnoses. Within psychology, the body and even emotion, has tended to be sidelined with a focus on the thinking mind, in line with current cultural values. However, this can result in the shoring up of old, previously necessary, but ultimately limiting, avoidance mechanisms, so that authentic change does not occur, when used exclusively. It can also lead to ‘stuckness’ in therapy.
Developments within the field of trauma therapy and research have begun to place, front and centre, the body, including our nervous system and our emotions, both as a container of trauma, and as a means to heal and re-connect with our ‘true selves’, our truth, our values and our uniqueness.
Through the application of somatic approaches therapy, and learning to listen to the language of the body, deeper and more profound healing and growth can occur within our clients and ourselves.
TESTIMONIALS
Emily Cooke I’ve been seeing Tracey for over 2 years now, she is always such a grounding, comforting presence, and someone I’ve always felt safe to share my story with. I recently did a somatic healing session with Tracey to assist in personal healing, particularly around acne and self image. And I can say the experience was absolutely incredible, and the results really speak for themselves. My skin is not only clearer, but my heart and mind are too. I would absolutely recommend Tracey to anyone looking for support and guidance. She is both a wealth of knowledge, and incredibly gifted in what she does. I am always excited for our sessions
Pat Gunston I recently had a somatic healing therapy session with Tracey. It was a unique and wonderful experience. I was experiencing a knot in my back that no one could shift. Tracey guided the therapy but after a period,,,, my own body started moving and stretching to heal itself. The shoulder is much better but what the session also allowed us to do was drill into some of my life experiences and unlock some beliefs I had held for decades. Beliefs that I didn’t understand but now do. It was a totally positive experience.
